Our 2nd stop on the tour was a fort originally built in the 9th century and renovated in the 17th century. Nizwa Fort has seven water wells, prisons, and defensive traps in case of invasions including stairs with wooden planks that could be removed to expose deep, gaping pits, and gun shooting windows. All of the traps they built are still visible with plexiglass covering the deep wells; very sobering. Fascinating place, probably not the best time of year or day to visit (it hit 50C/122F while we were there) but worth it. We spent a few minutes at the souk, which was much better than the one in Muttrah. Very nice vendors, no one was hawking or calling after you to buy anything, but it was closing so no time to really explore.
