Vienna. The Cathedral, know locally as The Steffl, is Austria’s most important Gothic building and the tallest church in Austria (136 meters/446 ft). Construction began in the 12th century and its interior changed repeatedly over the centuries until it was finally given its current Baroque appearance.  The tower room, where 13 bells hang, has expansive views across Vienna, and can only be reached by climbing 343 steps (strangely we missed that tour–actually it was cash only and too late in the day to go find an ATM). Catacombs below the cathedral hold the remains of approximately 11,000 people. They do offer tours of the catacombs, but we missed the window. On the list for the next trip.
